Sentaro vs Mimecast: gateway and archive platform or API-native layer

Mimecast sells an inline cloud gateway (MX) and an API product, plus archiving, with quote-based pricing (mimecast.com, October 2026), while Sentaro is an API-only layer that connects in four minutes with no MX change, catches BEC and vendor fraud and costs a published $6 per protected account per month; for EU teams on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, Sentaro is the better choice. Mimecast still fits teams that need its archive or on-premises and hybrid Exchange support.

  • API · no MX change
  • Runs alongside Microsoft and Google
  • $6 per account per month
  • Hosted in Sweden on Azure
Our recommendation

Sentaro is the better choice than Mimecast for EU teams on Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, and each reason can be checked: it connects over API in four minutes with no MX change, so there is no routing to undo; its BEC and vendor-fraud verdicts show their reasoning in the console, so you can audit them on your own mail; its App vector, live since Q3 2026, adds OAuth and shadow-AI discovery in the same seat; its price, $6 per protected account per month with every feature included, is published on sentaro.com/en/pricing, while Mimecast’s is quote-based (mimecast.com, October 2026); and it is hosted in Sweden on Microsoft Azure, with subprocessors listed in its public DPA.

Choose Sentaro if…
you are cloud-only on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, have lean IT, and want phishing and BEC protection without rerouting mail.
Why Sentaro wins
no MX change (your MX record does not move), a four-minute setup you can undo, the first account free so you can test it yourself, the App vector for OAuth and shadow AI included, and a published price instead of a sales quote.
Consider Mimecast only if…
you need its compliance archive, on-premises or hybrid Exchange support, or DMARC, awareness and insider-risk products from one vendor.
Price
Mimecast does not publish pricing on mimecast.com (October 2026). Sentaro is $6 per protected account per month, first account free. Prices in USD.

Mimecast Cloud Gateway, Cloud Integrated or an API layer: what is the difference?

Mimecast sells two deployment models. Email Security, Cloud Gateway is a secure email gateway: MX records point to Mimecast, which filters and then forwards mail. Email Security, Cloud Integrated connects to Microsoft 365 over API with no MX change; Mimecast’s 2022 launch release said it typically deploys in under five minutes.

Sentaro is API only and works on Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. It runs behind native filtering, scores every inbound and internal message before interaction, and can block, quarantine or tag it in the mailbox. The same connection gives a live inventory of every app, AI tool and OAuth grant in the tenant within 15 minutes, which is outside the scope of an email gateway.

The honest trade-off: a gateway controls mail in transit, so it is the natural home for archiving, encryption and outbound policy. An API layer gives up that control in exchange for no rerouting, visibility into internal mail and history, and a four-minute setup you can undo by disconnecting.

Where Sentaro wins

  • Setup: Sentaro connects over API in four minutes with no MX changes and no agents; historical visibility follows within 15 minutes.
  • Targeted fraud: BEC, vendor fraud, thread hijacking, QR lures and consent phishing are scored from intent, relationship and thread context.
  • App risk in the same seat: the App vector inventories every app, AI tool and OAuth grant in the tenant. We found no OAuth app discovery documented on mimecast.com (October 2026).
  • Price you can see: $6 per protected account per month, every feature included, monthly plans you can cancel anytime. Mimecast does not publish pricing.
  • Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 from one API connection, with Slack and Teams listed as channels.
  • A Swedish vendor, hosted in Sweden on Microsoft Azure, built for the controls regulated EU firms are asked to evidence under NIS2 and DORA.

Where Mimecast may still fit

  • Archiving: Mimecast Email Archive is a core product. Sentaro does not archive mail.
  • Hybrid and on-premises mail: Mimecast supports on-premises and hybrid environments. Sentaro documents only Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace.
  • Human-risk breadth: awareness training, DMARC Analyzer and Code42 Incydr insider risk are sold as add-ons. Sentaro offers no training, DMARC service or DLP.

Moving from Mimecast to Sentaro

Sentaro connects alongside whatever you run today, so the two can overlap while you decide. A typical sequence:

  1. 01

    Connect Sentaro alongside Mimecast

An admin connects Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace over API in about four minutes. Mimecast keeps filtering as before.

  2. 02

Compare on live and historical mail

Historical visibility follows within 15 minutes. Tag inline first, and review what Sentaro flags that reached inboxes.

  3. 03

    Plan for the archive

Decide whether to keep Mimecast’s archive under a separate contract, export it, or move retention to Microsoft Purview or Google Vault. Sentaro does not archive.

  4. 04

    Replace the other add-ons

Map DMARC reporting, awareness training and DLP to native features or dedicated tools before cutover.

  5. 05

    Cut over

Enable Microsoft’s preset Standard or Strict policies or Gmail’s advanced Safety settings, point MX back to Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, and remove Mimecast connectors and allow-list entries.

From gateway to API: a customer case

“We chose Sentaro because it gave us an extra layer of security without creating more work. It was quick to roll out and gave us the visibility we had been missing.”

Frequently asked questions

Is Sentaro better than Mimecast?

Yes, for EU teams on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace that need protection against phishing and business email compromise. Sentaro connects over API in four minutes with no MX change, includes OAuth and shadow-AI discovery, and costs $6 per protected account per month with every feature included. Prices in USD. Mimecast remains the fit if you rely on its archive or run hybrid Exchange.

How much does Mimecast cost?

Mimecast does not publish pricing; packages are quoted through sales and partners. Sentaro publishes its price: $6 per protected account per month, or $68 per account per year, with every feature included and the first account free. Prices in USD.

Is Mimecast a secure email gateway or API-based?

Both. Email Security, Cloud Gateway is an inline gateway that requires MX changes. Email Security, Cloud Integrated connects to Microsoft 365 over API with no MX change. Sentaro is API only and covers Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace.

Can Sentaro replace Mimecast?

It can replace Mimecast’s threat-protection role on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, with native filtering handling bulk mail. It does not replace Mimecast’s archive, DMARC Analyzer, awareness training or DLP. Plan for those before you cut over.

Who owns Mimecast?

Mimecast has been owned by funds advised by Permira since May 2022, after a take-private of about $5.8 billion ($80 per share) that delisted it from Nasdaq. Since then it has made several acquisitions, including Code42 (insider risk) in 2024.

Does Mimecast host data in the EU?

Mimecast opened two replicated data centres in Frankfurt in June 2018; UK data centres were reported in the same period. Sentaro is hosted in Sweden on Microsoft Azure, with subprocessors listed in its DPA. Both can serve EU firms; compare the DPAs.

What is a good Mimecast alternative for Microsoft 365?

Sentaro is our pick. For phishing and BEC protection on Microsoft 365, it runs as an API layer on top of Microsoft Defender with no MX change, includes app and shadow-AI discovery, and publishes its price. If you rely on Mimecast for archiving or hybrid mail, plan for those separately.

What if we are under contract with Mimecast?

Run Sentaro alongside Mimecast for the rest of the term. Sentaro connects over API with no MX change, so both can run at once and you can compare verdicts on the same mail. Sentaro’s monthly plans can be cancelled anytime, so you can time the switch to your Mimecast renewal date.
