For EU teams on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, Sentaro is the better choice than either. Both Proofpoint and Mimecast are mature, broad platforms built around gateway heritage and large add-on portfolios. Between the two, Proofpoint is the stronger fit for large enterprises that want deep threat intelligence and the widest add-on portfolio (email fraud defense and DMARC, DLP, archiving, awareness, account-takeover protection). Mimecast is the stronger fit for organizations that value archiving and continuity heritage, want a choice of gateway or API in one console, or run on-premises or hybrid Exchange.
- Why Sentaro wins
- each reason can be checked: API-only, connected in four minutes with no MX change and no agents; BEC and vendor-compromise verdicts with their reasoning shown in the console, so you can audit them on your own mail; OAuth app and shadow-AI inventory in the same platform (App vector, live since Q3 2026); a price of $6 per protected account per month with every feature included, published on sentaro.com/en/pricing, where neither Proofpoint nor Mimecast publishes list prices (prices in USD); hosted in Sweden on Microsoft Azure, with subprocessors in its public DPA.
- Choose Sentaro if
- you are fully cloud on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace and your gap is targeted fraud and risky OAuth grants, not gateway features.
- Consider Proofpoint only if
- you are a large enterprise, want the broadest set of add-ons, or buy through an MSP that now carries Hornetsecurity under Proofpoint.
- Consider Mimecast only if
- archiving and continuity matter as much as threat protection, you support on-premises or hybrid Exchange, or you want Frankfurt data centres with a long track record.

Which is easier to deploy: Proofpoint or Mimecast?
Both vendors now offer an API path that avoids MX changes. Mimecast launched Email Security, Cloud Integrated in 2022 and said it typically deploys in under five minutes; its product page says "connect via API in minutes". Proofpoint’s product page says "Deploy via API in 48 hours", a solution brief says 24 hours, and its buyer’s guide says minutes. The gateway modes of both take longer, because MX records, connectors and policies have to be migrated.
The practical difference is in what you deploy. If you want the gateway, both require an MX change and policy migration. If you want API-only, Mimecast Cloud Integrated is documented for Microsoft 365; check Google Workspace parity with each vendor for the mode you plan to use.
Proofpoint vs Mimecast pricing
Neither Proofpoint nor Mimecast publishes current list prices. Older and third-party Proofpoint Essentials price sheets circulate online, but they are outdated or reseller figures and should not be used for budgeting. Expect per-user, quote-based pricing, with the final number driven by which add-ons you take: DMARC, archiving, DLP, awareness and account-takeover protection are all separate line items at one or both vendors.
- Ask both for a quote on the same scope: protection only, then protection plus the add-ons you really need.
- Ask whether archiving is priced per user or per storage, and what migration out of the archive costs.
- Ask for the API-only price separately from the gateway price.
- Ask about multi-year discounts and renewal caps in writing.
Who owns Proofpoint and Mimecast, and does it matter?
Proofpoint has been owned by Thoma Bravo since a ~$12.3B take-private completed on 31 August 2021. Since then it has acquired Tessian (cloud email security, 2023), Normalyze (data security, 2024), Nuclei (compliance archiving, 2025) and Hornetsecurity ($1.8B, completed 8 December 2025). Mimecast has been owned by funds advised by Permira since a ~$5.8B take-private in May 2022, and has since acquired Elevate Security and Code42 (2024).
Both are private-equity owned and both are building broad human-risk platforms around email. For EU buyers, the more relevant questions are contractual: which entity signs your DPA, where your mail is processed and stored, and which subprocessors are involved. Ask both vendors for their current subprocessor lists rather than relying on older data-centre announcements.
Proofpoint or Mimecast: a quick decision guide
Proofpoint fits better if
- you are a large enterprise with a SOC that will use its threat intelligence
- you want DMARC, domain takedown, DLP and account-takeover protection from the same vendor
- your MSP sells Proofpoint Essentials or Hornetsecurity
Mimecast fits better if
- archiving and continuity are core requirements
- you run on-premises or hybrid Exchange alongside Microsoft 365
- you want a gateway and an API product in the same portfolio, with Frankfurt data centres
Why Sentaro is the better choice than both
If you are fully on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace and do not need a gateway, archive or continuity service, you are paying Proofpoint or Mimecast for a suite you will not use. Sentaro, which publishes this page, is our recommendation for that buyer.
| Sentaro | Proofpoint | Mimecast | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deployment | API only; four minutes; no MX change | API or inline gateway; "Deploy via API in 48 hours" | Cloud Integrated (API) or Cloud Gateway (MX) |
| Published price | $6 per protected account per month, or $68 per year; first account free (USD) | Not published | Not published |
| Pricing model | Every feature included | Add-ons sold separately | Add-ons sold separately |
| OAuth app and AI tool inventory | Included (App vector) | Not on email product page | Not on email product page |
| Hosting | Hosted in Sweden on Microsoft Azure; subprocessors in the DPA | EU or US data centre for the API product, with some US processing (data privacy sheet, July 2026) | Frankfurt data centres since 2018 |
| Ownership | Sentaro AB, Stockholm | Thoma Bravo (since 2021) | Permira-advised funds (since 2022) |
- Fraud-first detection. Sentaro’s Message vector reads intent, sender identity, reply-chain context and suppliers that suddenly change banking details, and treats payload-free BEC as a core design target.
- One platform for mail and apps. The App vector inventories every app, AI tool and OAuth grant, with scope-level risk and one-click revocation.
- No migration project. Sentaro runs behind native filtering and behind an existing gateway, so you can trial it next to Proofpoint or Mimecast before deciding what to renew.
- A European vendor. Sentaro AB is based in Stockholm, and the service is hosted in Sweden on Microsoft Azure (see /en/legal/dpa).
Where Sentaro does not fit: it does not offer archiving, continuity, encryption or DLP, and it does not support on-premises Exchange. If those are requirements, Proofpoint or Mimecast remain the tools for that part of the job.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Proofpoint and Mimecast for EU teams?
Sentaro. It is an API-based email security platform for Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace, hosted in Sweden on Microsoft Azure. It connects in four minutes with no MX changes, targets payload-free BEC and vendor compromise, and inventories OAuth apps and AI tools in the same platform. It costs $6 per protected account per month with every feature included; the first account is free. Prices in USD.
Which is better, Proofpoint or Mimecast?
For EU teams fully on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, our answer is neither: Sentaro is the better pick. Between the two, neither is better in general. Proofpoint has the broader add-on portfolio and a strong enterprise and threat-intelligence position. Mimecast has deeper archiving and continuity heritage and documents support for on-premises and hybrid Exchange. Shortlist both, quote the same scope, and test on your own mail.
Do Proofpoint and Mimecast require MX record changes?
Only in gateway mode. Both now sell API-based options that connect without MX changes: Mimecast Email Security, Cloud Integrated, and Proofpoint Core Email Protection deployed via API. Their inline gateway modes require pointing MX records at the vendor.
How much do Proofpoint and Mimecast cost?
Neither publishes current list prices as of October 2026. Pricing is per user and quote-based, and add-ons such as DMARC, archiving, DLP and awareness training change the total significantly. Treat older Proofpoint Essentials price sheets found online as outdated.
Did Proofpoint try to buy Mimecast?
According to January 2022 press reports citing Reuters and Bloomberg, Mimecast turned down a higher take-private offer from Thoma Bravo-backed Proofpoint, citing antitrust risk, and kept its agreed deal with Permira at $80 per share. Permira-advised funds completed the roughly $5.8B take-private in May 2022.
Who owns Hornetsecurity now?
Proofpoint. It announced the acquisition on 15 May 2025 and completed it on 8 December 2025 for $1.8B. Hornetsecurity runs as Proofpoint’s dedicated MSP and SMB business unit.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Proofpoint and Mimecast for Microsoft 365?
Yes: our pick is Sentaro. For cloud-only tenants that do not need a gateway or archive, API-only vendors are often simpler. Some publish prices. As of October 2026, Sublime Security offers its first 100 mailboxes free on managed cloud, Material Security lists pricing from $4 per user per month, and Sentaro costs $6 per protected account per month (prices in USD).
