Sentaro is the better choice than Barracuda Email Protection for EU teams on Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace whose real risk is payload-free fraud, and each reason can be checked: it connects over API in four minutes with no MX change; its BEC, vendor-compromise and QR-lure verdicts show their reasoning in the console, so you can audit them on your own mail; its App vector, live since Q3 2026, inventories every app, AI tool and OAuth grant in the same seat; its price, $6 per protected account per month with every feature included, is published on sentaro.com/en/pricing, while barracuda.com lists plans but not prices; and it is hosted in Sweden on Microsoft Azure, with subprocessors listed in its public DPA.
- Choose Sentaro if…
- your gap is BEC, vendor compromise, QR lures and consent phishing, you want an app and OAuth-grant inventory included, and you prefer Swedish hosting and a public price.
- Why Sentaro wins
- one published plan with every feature included (sentaro.com/en/pricing), reasoning shown on every verdict, Slack and Teams scored by the same engine, the first account free so you can test it yourself, and monthly plans you can cancel anytime.
- Consider Barracuda only if…
- you want Microsoft 365 backup, archiving, encryption, DLP and training under one contract; Sentaro can still run alongside it over API.
Key differences: why Sentaro
Built for targeted fraud
Sentaro’s Message vector is designed for payload-free attacks: BEC, vendor compromise, thread hijacking and QR lures. We found no vendor-compromise or QR-code detection documented on barracuda.com (October 2026).
App and OAuth risk included
Sentaro inventories every app, AI tool and OAuth grant and blocks consent phishing in every plan. We found no OAuth-grant inventory documented on barracuda.com (October 2026).
A price you can see
Sentaro publishes $6 per protected account per month ($68/year, first account free; prices in USD). barracuda.com does not publish prices (October 2026).
Account takeover
Barracuda lists ATO detection in all plans today (barracuda.com, October 2026); Sentaro does not offer it yet. See the roadmap note below.

What is in each Barracuda Email Protection plan?
Barracuda sells Email Protection in three cumulative plans. According to its plans page, every plan includes phishing and BEC protection, account-takeover detection, domain fraud protection with DMARC reporting, encryption and DLP. Premium adds Microsoft 365 backup, including OneDrive and SharePoint scanning. Premium Plus adds cloud archiving and security awareness training. Barracuda does not publish prices.
| Need | Barracuda plan | Sentaro |
|---|---|---|
| Phishing, BEC, ATO, DMARC, encryption, DLP | Advanced | Phishing and BEC in Pro; ATO not yet (see roadmap note); no DMARC, encryption or DLP |
| Add Microsoft 365 backup | Premium | Not in Sentaro’s published scope |
| Add archiving and training | Premium Plus | Not in Sentaro’s published scope |
| App, AI-tool and OAuth-grant inventory | Not publicly documented | Included in Pro |
Sentaro has one paid plan with every feature included: simpler to buy, and narrower. If you would otherwise buy backup, archiving and training separately, price both stacks before deciding.
How do the detection approaches differ?
Barracuda describes Barracuda IQ as multi-model AI that analyzes intent and identity anomalies using more than 100 global threat feeds, and says it re-evaluates risk after delivery. Its "Bailey" assistant explains detection decisions in plain language.
Sentaro’s engine, Vord, deconstructs each message into proprietary signals across intent and language, sender identity and infrastructure, relationship and thread context, and links, attachments and QR codes. It uses existing mailbox history to establish baselines quickly rather than requiring a long learning period. Every verdict shows its reasoning in the admin console. Payload-free attacks such as invoice fraud in a compromised supplier thread are a core design target.
We found no independent detection-rate testing for either product. Test both on your own reported phishing and finance-team mail.
Where Sentaro wins
- Your residual risk is BEC, vendor compromise and QR lures behind existing filtering: these are Sentaro’s core design target.
- You want an inventory of every app, AI tool and OAuth grant, and to block consent phishing before the grant lands, in the same seat.
- You want Slack and Teams messages scored by the same engine as email.
- You want one plan with every feature included, a published price, and a vendor hosted in Sweden on Microsoft Azure.
We make Sentaro, so weigh this section accordingly: every point above comes from Sentaro’s published product information, and its limits are listed on this page too.
Where Barracuda may still fit
- You want threat protection, DMARC reporting, encryption, DLP, Microsoft 365 backup, archiving and training under one contract.
- You need account-takeover detection that is live today; Sentaro’s is not live yet.
- Your MSP already standardizes on Barracuda’s Email Protection for MSPs program.
Switching from Barracuda, or adding Sentaro next to it
- 01
Map what you use
List which Barracuda features you rely on: backup, archiving, encryption, DMARC, training. Those need a home before you change anything.
- 02
Connect Sentaro alongside
Sentaro connects over API in four minutes and does not change mail routing, so both can run on the same tenant.
- 03
Compare catches for a month
Review what each layer flagged, especially BEC and vendor-payment requests.
- 04
Decide on the bundle
Keep Barracuda for the bundle features, or move them to dedicated tools and let Sentaro handle detection.
What Sentaro customers report
“We chose Sentaro because it gave us an extra layer of security without creating more work. It was quick to roll out and gave us the visibility we had been missing.”
From quarterly awareness training to zero clicks required.
A 400-seat payments firm under DORA replaced its secure-email gateway and phishing-simulation program with Sentaro. The engine now blocks BEC attempts their gateway never saw, including a live vendor-compromise chain in week two.

Frequently asked questions
Is Sentaro better than Barracuda?
Yes, for EU teams on Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace whose main risk is BEC, vendor fraud, QR phishing and OAuth app abuse. Sentaro connects over API in four minutes, includes app and shadow-AI discovery, is hosted in Sweden on Microsoft Azure, and costs $6 per protected account per month with every feature included. Prices in USD. Barracuda may still fit if you want backup, archiving and training in one bundle.
Is Barracuda Email Protection API-based or a gateway?
Both, depending on the component. Barracuda’s Email Protection product page describes an API-first deployment without MX record changes, while Barracuda’s Campus documentation for Email Gateway Defense says you must point your MX records at Barracuda. Confirm which components a quote includes. Sentaro is API-only and never changes MX records.
How much does Barracuda Email Protection cost?
Barracuda does not publish prices on barracuda.com (checked 18 October 2026). Reseller and public-sector catalogs show indicative figures, but those are not vendor list prices. As of 18 October 2026, Sentaro costs $6 per protected account per month, or $68 per account per year; the first account is free. Prices in USD.
Is Sentaro a Barracuda alternative?
Yes, and it is our pick for email threat detection on Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. Sentaro does not offer the backup, archiving, encryption, DLP, DMARC and training that Barracuda bundles, so teams that rely on those keep Barracuda for them or move them to dedicated tools.
Who owns Barracuda?
KKR investment funds completed the acquisition of Barracuda from Thoma Bravo, announced on 16 August 2022. Terms were not disclosed. Sentaro AB was founded in 2025 in Stockholm.
Does Sentaro protect Google Workspace like Barracuda?
Yes. Both support Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. Sentaro connects through the Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 admin SDKs, with historical visibility within 15 minutes of connecting.
