Shadow AI refers to the unsanctioned or unmanaged use of artificial intelligence tools, models, or services by employees or teams within an organization—without oversight from IT or cybersecurity departments. Much like Shadow IT, it represents a growing blind spot in enterprise security strategies. Shadow AI typically emerges when employees use consumer AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Midjourney, or browser plugins) to automate tasks or enhance productivity—often without realizing the data exposure risks. These tools may process sensitive customer data, proprietary code, or internal documentation that was never meant to leave the organization.
